It takes more than platform skills to build a speaking business
I became a professional speaker in one day.
Even by National Speakers Association folklore, I am an anomaly. I did not realize one was, evidently, supposed to speak for free, then for expenses only. Then slowly, over the course of years, grow a speaker business. Evidently that part of the plan was missing in my DNA.
I had a passion and a message. My market place, (teaching dental practice management) I felt, was not being served. I hired a hotel, sent out a flier and l49 paying customers walked through the day. I grossed $18,500 for my first speaking day. I thought, ‘this can only get better’! And it did.
So when I speak to you as a colleague, I am truly speaking from experience.
FACT: When you focus on building your presentation skills without paying attention to actually building a career as a speaker, you find yourself overworked, underpaid and undervalued.
As a result of building a successful speaking business that wasn’t solely dependent on live presentations, I sold my speaker/product company to third largest US dental supply company. Later through acquisition, I became a division of Henry Schein, a worldwide distributor of medical and dental supplies including vaccines, pharmaceuticals, financial services and equipment. In time, I took my company back and today, I continue to speak and educate both dental professionals and the professional speakers at every level.
